This is the right time to spread the word on current status of Indian biotechnology growth rate and possible careers available for post-graduates and also encourage students to pursue a career in Biotechnology and Bioinformatics. Indian Biotechnology ranks 12th internationally, stands 3rd in Asia and Indian biotechnology is raising its bio-economy rapidly. Keeping the fact in mind Yogi Vemana University (YVU), Andhra Pradesh–India, organized one-day seminar on “Career talks in Biotechnology and Bioinformatics”.

“Career Talks on Biotechnology and Bioinformatics” has been organized and executed successfully by Department of Biotechnology and Bioinformatics (5 years integrated course) at YVU. The ideation of the event originates from Dr. Sabeera, Executive Director of “Biostandups”, a virtual news room for Science, biotechnology and healthcare updates. The seminar was hosted on 30th December at YUV, seminar hall. Career talks give data on different occupations inside an industry. They acquaint understudies with the nature and extent of the work done and instruct them on the aptitudes important to play out certain employment capacities. The Career Talks are likewise intended to energize and propel youngsters about the career choices and openings accessible to them.

The session was chaired by YVU Vice-Chancellor Prof. Attipalli Ramachandra reddy, who delivered message on how difficult it was to survive and thrive in Biotechnology back in his graduation days. Biotechnology is contained with huge career opportunities in India as well as in rest of the world, and current growth rate of Indian biotechnology is growing at high speed, says Prof. Ramachandra Reddy.

Following the Session, Prof. Kavi Kishore (Department of Biotechnology, Osmania University, Hyderabad – India), shared tremendous amount of knowledge on current career opportunities for Biotechnology and Bioinformatics students. Prof. Kavi Kishore added fragrance to the event by sharing innovative ideas with which any undergraduate can start their own startups and can achieve success in Agri-business, Biofuel production and big data management nationally as well as globally. Patenting rights on local traditional foods, farming of local famous fish species such as Tenualosa ilisha (commonly know Pulasa in telugu/ ilish in bengali / Palva in gujarati), freelance scientific writing as some of opportunities for entry level graduates was suggested by Kavi Kishore.

“Lead now, learn how”- under this title Dr. Sabeera, Executive director of “Biostandups” talked about the skills which students must educate themselves before graduating, as these skills were not thought in university syllabus. Dr. Sabeera talked about the importance of preparation, research, networking and scientific writing as desired assets to biotechnology students as having degree can never guarantee a job. Sharing the success stories from some of her master’s batch mates provided students with knowledge of traditional as well as unconventional paths to choose as career after completing biotechnology. Sabeera also highlighted on academic and non-academic jobs to choose as future career. She further added information that creating your own opportunities (entrepreneurships) to solve the problems and to raise the bio-economy can also be considered as a possible career.

Lastly, the session was hosted by Raghuram G. V, GM operations from UPL group of companies – Telegana, came up with innovative way to teach and educate graduates about the basics of career, career development, communication and team management. The interactive session with graduates helped them to understand exactly what career means in Agri-business. Raghuram enlighten students with observation, communication, IT, team work and leadership skills practically. The interactive presentation of Raghuram was thoroughly enjoyed by the students and made students to realize how far they are from understanding the real meaning of the skills and their application.

Overall the event added value to more than 150 graduate participants. Seminar on Career talks prepare students to face the challenges in real world. Career talks are stepping stones for future success of aspiring graduates. As the ending note, students reported that the seminar was Interesting, informative, educational and persuasive on a scale of 8-10, measured through feedback analysis report. Biostandups team willing to participate in such events as many as possible to guide the future generation on to the right track.
